How to Optimize Your WordPress Database for Maximum Speed and Performance

Optimize Wordpress Database

Your WordPress database plays the important role of storing all your site’s information. Sometimes, your website may have excess data that makes the database bloated. This can slow down your web pages and affect the overall performance of your site. When you optimize the WordPress database, you clean it up and clear more server space, allowing your website to reach its performance potential. Let’s have a look at optimizing database performance effectively:

Your WordPress site automatically becomes slower if it holds more unnecessary data in the database. Unfortunately, it is not possible to get rid of all unnecessary files at all times. Even if you are consistent in deleting everything that is not useful, your WordPress database can pile up more data in no time. That’s why every database requires maintenance at some point in time.

By optimizing your WordPress database, you enhance the overall speed and performance of your website. Without optimization, you will be stuck with a slow website that will affect more than just the user experience. It may result in an increase in bounce rates or even a significant drop in your site’s rankings on search engine results pages (SERPs).

Now that we have established the importance of optimizing your WordPress database, let’s have a look at some of the ways you can do this. The processes are pretty straightforward, whether you choose to do it manually or use a system to automate.

Manual WordPress Database Optimization

This is a good option for those who want to avoid adding any new plugins to their site or deleting a WP table altogether. Make sure to back up the existing WordPress database before getting started. Then, open phpMyAdmin via your hosting provider and select the Databases Tab.

Choose the WordPress database name you wish to optimize, check all to optimize all of the WP tables, followed by the ‘With selected:’ window, and choose Optimize Table. Right-click and choose Optimize Table to optimize your database by defragmenting the selected WP tables. When the process is complete, you will receive a message, “Your SQL query has been executed successfully.”

The other option is to use the WordPress built-in automatic database optimization tool. The approach requires you to edit your site’s wp-config.php file. Start by backing up your database, and then access the wp-config.php file located in your site’s root folder. Download the file and edit it using a text editor such as Windows Notepad or Notepad++. You may also choose to edit the wp-config.php file inside hPanel by double-clicking on it.

Once you open the wp-config.php file, add the following line: define ( ‘WP_ALLOW_REPAIR’, true ); Place the new line above “/* That’s all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */”. Save the wp-config.php file and close it, or reupload it to replace the existing one if you were editing it on Notepad. Access the optimization tool at http://www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin/maint/repair.php, where you will see an on-screen option to Repair and Optimize the Database. Once the process is complete, return to the wp-config.php file and remove the added line.

This is perhaps the easiest way to optimize your WordPress database. You only need to install and activate the optimization plugins via your WordPress dashboard. Some of the plugin options available for this task include:

  • WP-DBManager: Used to optimize a WordPress database, back up, and restore files.
  • WP-Optimize: An advanced tool that allows compressing, caching, and cleaning up a WordPress database.
  • Advanced Database Cleaner: Designed exclusively to help in cleaning up the WordPress database.
